FFfAW – A New Life

Mortimer had been with the firm for forty years, becoming one of the top attorneys. But, he became bored with his life.

Standing in the law library he becomes temporarily blinded by a bright shining light coming in through the window. A large apparition stands before him. Mortimer shrieks and falls backward consumed by fear.

“Mortimer. I am Micah and I am here to give you a message.”

“Me, a message?” He can barely speak.

“You are going to go and help those who are less fortunate.”

“Why…why…why me?”

“You are being given the chance to redeem yourself from the years you charged more than you were worth and for hours you didn't work, stealing money from hard working people.”

As the apparition faded away, Mortimer found himself in a third world country surrounded by starving people. Mortimer was in the midst of helping feed and care for these people.

As a small boy reached his arms up to Mortimer to be picked up, Mortimer realized he has finally found his happiness and his home.

  1. Perfect! I’m glad he realized that helping others is what brings true happiness, not only to the people you help, but to you as well! Lovely story! πŸ™‚

  2. There’s nothing like changing yourself. I like how his motivation went from being extrinsic to intrinsic. At the end, he’s genuinely helping people and finding happiness in doing so. Heh! Now if only he could meet Scrooge πŸ˜› They’d have great stories to share

  3. Awe, I love this PJ! I especially love the twist you added at the end!! Good evening to you…I hope you had a rewarding day!! ((HUGS!!)) xoxo

    • Thank you Deb! I’m so glad you liked it! My day has been HOT! My AC isn’t working right. My handyman came over and tried to fix it but couldn’t so I have a professional coming tomorrow. Hopefully he will be able to fix it! I hope you had a wonderful day too!

      • Oh no!! I’m so sorry to hear that! The professional should be able to get it running…hopefully if it needs any parts he’ll have them with him…I’m must admit I prefer the heat over cold but it’s so hard to sleep when it’s too warm!! Drink ice cold water that will help keep you cooler and soak your feet in cold water too, plus put a cold face cloth on top of your head…all of that should help!

        • Thanks! I drink iced tea all day and that helps but I’ll try the cold rag and feet soaking, if I need to. I hope he will have any parts that are needed. I told him what is wrong so hopefully he knows why and will bring what is needed to fix it. My worry is that my AC is pretty old and I HOPE it hasn’t bit the dust. LOL!

  4. Wonderful story. He was given the chance to redeem himself and found out how wonderful it is to help other people. It has made his life more meaningful to him.

  5. i had to deal with some unsavoury lawyers and then today read this and totally believe that they will get their just rewards! short and so impacting! though i am glad you made him seem more humane at the end, that he had found his purpose in serving the less fortunate, could it be Mortimer was redeemed because he had been a tiny teeny bit kind in the past?

  6. Great story, PJ. πŸ™‚ Forty years as a money-sucking lawyer means he needs to perform a lot of kind acts to fully redeem himself! It’s a shame he didn’t realise sooner that money doesn’t actually bring you happiness. I hope he finds he new life fulfilling.

    • Thank you so much! Yes, I noticed that Michael used the name Mortimer too. LOL! I thought the same thing you did, that Mortimer is an unusual name and how strange that two of us would use the name.

I would love to read your thoughts...
