Two Black Cats

Two black cats and it's almost Halloween!

Last night my cousin who lives about 2,000 miles away, called me. She was very concerned about her daughter's cats being abandoned two months ago, when she and her boyfriend moved to Houston, Texas. These poor cats were left to defend for themselves and depend on themselves.

Truthfully, I do not know her daughter. I think I met her once many years ago, but that's about it. I do know that she and her boyfriend are both drug addicts.

Now back to my story. I went over to their abandoned house this morning fully expecting these two cats to be long gone. To my surprise, and heartache, they were both sitting in front of the house waiting for their owner to come home.

I brought a can of tuna fish and two bowls, which I placed out for them. They attacked this meal with great vigor, so they both were obviously starving.

While the larger of the two was eating, I picked him up to put him in my carrier. He struggled and escaped from me and I was no longer able to get even remotely close to him.

I decided to go ahead and leave quite a bit of dry food for them that would last few days, and come back and try again on another day. I knew they would need to get comfortable with me and that might take some time.

On my way home, and feeling a little forlorn, I realized I had forgotten to leave them water. So I returned in order to leave them some water.

The smaller of the two cats, who was eating the dry food, allowed me to approach her. I was able to pick her up and put her in the pet carrier and bring her home.

In a few days I will go back and hopefully, be able to capture Big Boy (don't know what he was named).

Little Girl (I don't know what she was named) is hiding under the bed as far back as she can get. She has allowed me to pet her and she has returned the affection. (I think she might be more afraid of my little dog than she is of me and why she might be hiding).

I don't understand why people will abandon their animals. I will never be able to understand this, because personally, I think it is cruel.

How do you feel about people abandoning their pets?

  1. oh my! You are an angel to rescue those kitties. I hope you will be able to get Big Boy, wonder if he would go into the carrier to get food that was placed in the back? I hope Little Girl starts to feel safe. My cat will hide under the bed after the mobile vet comes to see him. It may just take time. Bless you.

There really are not enough bad words to describe how I feel about people who mistreat animals.

    • Thank you Tildy! I agree! I will go over there every few days or so and see if I can get him to warm up to me. I found out a little while ago that he is a sprayer. In that case, I don’t know what I’ll do. I don’t want a sprayer. I have a lot of friends that live on farms and out in the country. I can probably find him a good home there.

  2. I’m so happy you were there to take in these cats and take care of them- I can’t imagine why people do this to their animals, for me it would be like leaving my sister on the side of the road! I recently convinced my grandpa to take in a poor starving cat that someone had left when they moved, and I’m glad he did because she probably wouldn’t have survived

  3. I agree with you it is cruel and way to go you. When I was younger a very scrawny/unusual looking dog would come up to me while I was waiting for the bus. He was quite skittish but he kept trying to approach the members of the house whenever they were by themselves, he was never ever aggressive, just frightened. We already had a dog so we had plenty of dog food and we set out extra dishes for him. It took him a while because I think he might have been abused or in a bad living situation but eventually he warmed up and became part of the family completely. He never barked and was a very sweet dog. He loved running and was extremely fast. I am not sure what his breed was. Where my mom lives in the country there is tons of room for dogs to play and lots of forest to explore so everyone in the area has dogs. Those dogs always spend most of their time at my mom’s place. My mom frequently takes the neighbor’s dogs to the vets as well making sure they are up their shots and stuff since the neighbors can be a little too lax at times. I used to give the dogs baths and groom them, whatever dogs were in the yard that needed it ours or not.

      • I was only a little girl so obviously she was primarily responsible for the dog. As an adult I haven’t lived anywhere that would allow me to have dogs. I will be moving to a house in December with a modest yard so I might be able to have pets in the future and hope too 😄

  4. What a sad story. You know, if they’re siblings, the chances are they will miss each other like crazy. My little Missy-cat was devastated when she lost her brother 7 months ago. Poor little things

  5. That’s so horrible! I used to have a black cat named Bleu but gave her away because I found out I was allergic. I’m glad you were able to feed them and take the little one.

I would love to read your thoughts...
